Fragrance oil grams to ml: how many ml is 1 gram?
Fragrance oil has a density of about 0.95 g/ml, so 1 gram is roughly 1.05 ml. The conversion formula, a ready-made table, densities for alcohol and premixed base, and how to measure your own oil's density.
You buy fragrance oil by weight, but you write your formula in millilitres. Or the other way round: you have 50 grams of oil and a syringe marked in ml. The conversion between them comes down to one number — density.
The short answer
Perfume fragrance oils are generally taken to have a density of 0.95 g/ml. That gives you:
ml = grams / 0.95 · grams = ml × 0.95
- 1 gram of fragrance oil ≈ 1.05 ml
- 1 ml of fragrance oil ≈ 0.95 grams
So the number in grams is always slightly smaller than the number in millilitres. A 100 gram bottle of oil holds roughly 105 ml of liquid — worth remembering when you compare prices quoted by weight against prices quoted by volume.

Densities of the other components
If you weigh some components and measure others by volume, you need a separate factor for each one. The usual working values:

Is 0.95 right for every oil?
No — it is an average. Real density ranges roughly from 0.85 to 1.05 g/ml depending on what is in the composition. Heavy resinous, vanillic and oud-type blends can go above 1.0; light citrus and essential-oil-led compositions can fall below 0.90. If your supplier lists the density on the technical data sheet, use that number instead.
Measuring your own oil's density
- 1Put an empty syringe or container on the scale and tare it to zero.
- 2Draw exactly 10 ml of fragrance oil into it.
- 3Weigh it again and divide the reading in grams by 10. That is the density of that oil in g/ml.
- 4Save the value with the oil's record — you never have to measure it again.
For example: if 10 ml of oil weighs 9.7 grams, the density is 0.97 g/ml. For that oil 1 gram is 1.03 ml, not the average 1.05.
Which should you work in — grams or millilitres?
If you have a scale that reads to 0.01 g, working by weight is more accurate: liquid clinging to the syringe wall, trapped air bubbles and temperature all disturb a volume reading, while the scale ignores all three. IFRA limits are defined by weight too.
