How the calculation works

There are two modes, and the same percentage gives a different result in each, because the components have different densities. In volumetric (v/v) mode the percentages are read in millilitres: 25% oil in a 50 ml bottle means 12.5 ml of oil. In gravimetric (w/w) mode the percentages are read in grams; the bottle volume is held constant and the total mass is solved for.

Volumetric: ml = volume × share ⁄ 100 · g = ml × density

Gravimetric: M = volume ⁄ Σ((share ⁄ 100) ⁄ density) · g = M × share ⁄ 100

Professional perfumery works by weight as standard, and IFRA limits are defined by weight too. For home makers working with a syringe, the volumetric calculation stays practical. We covered the difference in a separate article, with numbers.

Grams or millilitres: the conversion

If you buy oil by weight but measure it by volume, the conversion is one line: ml = grams ⁄ density. At an average density of 0.95 g/ml, 1 gram of oil is about 1.05 ml and 1 ml is about 0.95 grams; 50 grams of oil is 52.6 ml. With alcohol the gap is larger: 100 grams of alcohol takes up 127 ml. The calculator prints the ml and gram figures side by side for every row, so you never have to do this by hand — the full grams-to-ml table is in a separate article.

Adding components

Working with a premixed base, two rows are enough: the oil and the base. Building your own base, you can add distilled water, fixative, Hedion or Iso E Super alongside the alcohol and give each its own share. The row marked fill the rest automatically takes whatever percentage is left over — so the total always comes to 100%.
