Volume or weight? Why the same 25% gives you two different bottles

Is the 25% in a perfume formula by volume or by weight? The formula for each method, how much they actually differ, and which one you should be using.

Someone posts a formula on a forum: “25% fragrance oil, rest alcohol.” You make the same thing and it comes out slightly different. The reason is usually not your nose — it is the measurement. Nobody said whether that 25% was by volume or by weight.

Where the difference comes from

Liquids do not all have the same density. Fragrance oil is around 0.95 g/ml, ethanol 0.789 g/ml, water 1.0 g/ml. So 1 ml of oil weighs 0.95 grams while 1 ml of alcohol weighs 0.789 grams (grams to ml conversion table). Depending on which unit the percentage refers to, a different amount ends up in the bottle.

  • Volumetric (v/v): the percentage is of millilitres. In a 50 ml bottle, 25% oil = 12.5 ml of oil.
  • Gravimetric (w/w): the percentage is of grams. The maths works out so that 25% of the total mass is oil.

The formulas

The volumetric side is easy. With a total volume V and a component share p:

ml = V × p / 100 · g = ml × density

The gravimetric side needs one extra step, because when you say “25% by weight” you do not yet know the total weight. The bottle is 50 ml, so we hold the total volume fixed and solve for the total mass:

M = V / Σ( (p_i / 100) / density_i ) · g_i = M × p_i / 100 · ml_i = g_i / density_i

Don't let the notation put you off — what it does is simple. It divides each component's share by that component's density and adds them up, which tells you how many millilitres one gram of the blend occupies. Divide the bottle volume by that and you have the total mass.

That is a difference of roughly 1.7 ml of fragrance oil. In a single 50 ml bottle it is not fatal, but two things follow. First, two people making “the same” formula by different methods do not get the same scent. Second, if you work close to an IFRA limit, which measure you used starts to matter — because IFRA defines its limits by weight.

Which one should you use?

Professional perfumery works by weight as standard. The reason is practical rather than regulatory: a scale gives the same reading under any conditions, whereas volume shifts with temperature and liquid left clinging to the syringe wall throws the reading off. IFRA limits are defined by weight too, so a gravimetric formula compares against them directly.

Even so, volumetric work is very common at home, because you already think of bottles in millilitres: “I'm making a 50 ml bottle.” If you have no scale and work with a syringe, staying volumetric is perfectly reasonable.

  • Precise scale and you plan to share the formula: by weight.
  • Working near an IFRA limit: by weight.
  • Syringe only, single bottle: by volume is fine.
  • Either way: write down which one you used, next to the formula.

The one real rule: don't mix them

Both methods are correct. What is wrong is mixing them inside one formula. Weigh the oil but measure the base with a syringe and you have made neither a volumetric nor a gravimetric blend — you have made something with no defined ratio at all, and you will not reproduce it next time.
