How to dilute fragrance oil (two jobs people confuse)

Diluting an oil to 10% so you can smell it properly and diluting it into a wearable spray are different jobs with different solvents. How to do each one on a scale, and how to avoid double-diluting by accident.

"How do I dilute fragrance oil" has two completely different answers, and the advice you find rarely says which one it is giving you. Getting them mixed up is how people end up with a perfume at a third of the strength they meant.

  • A working dilution. You cut the oil to 10% so you can actually evaluate it and measure small amounts accurately. This is a bench material, not a product.
  • A finished spray. You take the oil down to wearing strength, 15-30%, in perfumer's alcohol. This is the perfume.

Why a working dilution exists at all

Neat fragrance oil is close to unreadable. It is so concentrated that your nose fatigues within seconds and the composition flattens into one loud note. Diluted to 10%, the same oil separates out into something you can judge. There is a practical reason too: at 1% of a 10 ml blend you are trying to measure 0.1 g, which is at the edge of a hobby scale. From a 10% dilution that becomes 1 g, which any scale handles.

Work by weight here, not volume. Professional formula sheets are written w/w for a reason: a scale does not care about temperature, and taring between components is faster than rinsing a syringe.

Diluting into a finished spray

This is the other job, and here you are working from neat oil to a target concentration. At 20%, the standard starting point:

Blend the 10 ml first. It costs a fraction of a full bottle and the first concentration you try is rarely the one you keep. Fragrance oil to alcohol ratio has the other concentrations.

The mistake: double dilution

You make a 10% working dilution to evaluate an oil. You like it, so you build a 20% perfume, using the dilution, because that is the bottle on the bench. The perfume that comes out is 20% of a 10% solution, which is 2% oil. It smells of alcohol and almost nothing else, and the usual conclusion is that the oil was weak.

Two habits prevent it for good:

  • Write the strength on the bottle, not the material name. `Iso E Super 10% / DPG / 2026-09`, not `Iso E Super`.
  • Record the strength in the formula as well, so the number in your notes is unambiguous a year later. Keeping a formula record covers what else belongs in the entry.

If you do need to build from a dilution on purpose, the arithmetic is straightforward: to get 1 g of neat material into a blend from a 10% dilution, use 10 g of the dilution. Those extra 9 g are solvent that now counts toward your base.

Water

Adding water is common advice and mostly a bad idea. Above roughly 5-10% it pushes the blend cloudy, because the oils are no longer fully in solution, and it can make the opening harsher rather than softer. If you do add any, use distilled water, never tap. A cloudy blend sometimes clears after resting, but chill-filtering is the reliable fix and most home setups do not have one.
