How to calculate perfume cost per bottle
The cost of a homemade perfume bottle is materials plus packaging. The unit-price formula, a worked 50ml example, the line items people forget, and how to get to a profit margin.
The short answer
A bottle of perfume costs you two things added together: the materials that go into the mixture (fragrance oil plus base) and the packaging (bottle, sprayer, cap, label, box). For the materials, work out a price per millilitre for each component and multiply by the amount you used; the packaging is already a per-bottle figure.
The formula
Unit price first, then the amount used, then packaging:
price/ml = purchase price ⁄ volume purchased · price/g = price/ml ⁄ density
materials = Σ ( component_ml × price/ml )
cost per bottle = materials + packaging
Worked example: 50ml at 25%
A 50ml bottle at 25% means 12.5ml of fragrance oil and 37.5ml of ready-made base. With example unit prices:

The split shows the shape of the problem: packaging is a fixed load, while the oil moves with your concentration and your purchase price. Dropping from 25% to 20% takes the oil line from 6.88 to 5.50 in this example, so the bottle lands at 8.15.
The line items people forget
- Waste. What stays in the syringe, the funnel and the neck of the bottle. On small batches, allowing 2-5% is realistic.
- The leftover that cannot fill the last bottle. If 100 grams of oil gives you 8 bottles, the 21ml left over is not wasted, but it still belongs to that batch's cost.
- Shipping and customs. Left out of the purchase price, they make every material look cheaper than it is.
- Sample bottles. What you set aside for testing also comes out of the oil.
- Your own time. Not a cost if you are not selling, but part of pricing if you are.
Profit margin
If you sell, two more lines sit on top of the cost:
profit = selling price − cost per bottle · margin = profit ⁄ selling price × 100
Sell the 9.50 bottle above for 17.50 and the profit is 8.00, a margin of about 46%. Calculating the margin against the selling price matters: the same transaction described as "84% profit" on cost is not wrong, but it cannot be compared with anything.
What happens to old batches when prices move?
Fragrance oil prices move. The practical approach is to always cost at the most recent purchase price: replacement cost is what it costs today, not what you happened to pay for that batch. Keep the old prices anyway. Seeing how far something has climbed changes your pricing decisions.
