What percentage of fragrance oil should you use in perfume?

Home perfumers typically work between 15% and 30%. The concentration ranges from cologne to extrait, what actually sets your percentage, where the IFRA limit comes in, and when raising the concentration stops helping.

The short answer

There is no single correct percentage. Concentration is a formulation decision that sets how long the scent lasts and how heavily it opens. Home perfumers most often work between 18% and 30%. Around 20% is plenty for everyday wear; 25-30% is where people go for something denser and longer-lasting. Your ceiling, though, is set before your preference: it is the IFRA limit of the material you are using.

Concentration ranges

The names on the market map onto percentage bands. These are industry conventions rather than legal definitions, and they shift from brand to brand:

Longevity does not come from concentration alone. The note structure of the oil and your skin matter too, so two oils at the same percentage behave differently.

What sets your percentage

  • The IFRA limit. The ceiling stated in the documentation for the material you are using. If that limit says 12%, choosing 25% is not an option. See what an IFRA limit is.
  • The strength of the oil itself. Some compositions open heavily at 15%; others stay thin at 30%. The usage rate your supplier recommends is a good starting point.
  • The note structure. If the composition leans on volatile top notes, raising the concentration will not buy you much longevity; if the base notes are strong, even a low percentage lasts.
  • Cost. The oil is the most expensive component in the mixture. Going from 30% to 25% noticeably lowers the cost per bottle; you will find the numbers in how to calculate perfume cost.
  • What the base can carry. A high load of oil does not always dissolve clearly in alcohol; if you see cloudiness, look at the base before you blame the percentage.

Raising the percentage does not always help

Trying to fix a longevity problem by adding more oil is one of the most common mistakes. Past a certain point, a higher percentage does not make the scent last longer, it makes it heavier: the top notes get smothered and the opening turns sharp. Longevity comes mostly from base notes and fixatives. There is also a timing issue: a fresh mixture smells of alcohol and seems weak in its first days whatever its concentration, so let it rest for two to four weeks before you judge it.

By weight or by volume?

"25%" on its own is an incomplete statement: you have to say whether it is read by weight or by volume. The same number produces two different bottles, because the oil and the base have different densities. IFRA limits are defined by weight, so if you are comparing against a limit, your calculation has to be by weight too. More on that in volume or weight.
